Summer programs provide recreational learning experiences for children with developmental disabilities attending public education programs during the school year. Summer programs function to prevent the regression of skills learned or maintained, to expand a child's learning opportunity, and to provide the family with respite care. Summer programs for children are seasonal, short-term programs usually beginning with the third week of June and running through the third or fourth week of August of each year.
