Mission Statement

To provide individualized community support, and vocational services to developmentally disabled adults in Prince George's County. The program assists each individual to achieve a greater degree of social and economic independence and reduce the need for subsidized lifestyles.

Unique or Distinctive Qualities

SMVI was founded by a group of parents to provide supports to their children and other unserved children as they became adults. They remain family oriented and directed.

SMVI's Residential Services Program has three distinctions:

  1. SMVI makes great efforts to maintain family ties by including families in the individual's life to the limit of his/her desires;
  2. SMVI tailors services to meet the wishes of the individual; and
  3. SMVI strongly believes individuals should be involved in the community.

SMVI's Supported Employment Program:

  1. Provides door to door transportation for all the workers;
  2. Can ensure the workers are employed all the time; and
  3. Can meet the changing needs of individuals when hours or job sites change.

SMVI's Individual Support Services depend completely on what the individual wants/needs, and they have been shown to be extremely creative in designing supports. SMVI's Adult Leisure Program makes community integration a reality for individuals who cannot work and would otherwise have to remain at home, and schedules activities entirely according to the wishes of the individuals.

SMVI requires the very best in direct support staff, and make sure that they are extremely well trained, well beyond the minimum expectations. SMVI requires initial and periodic random drug screens, and criminal background checks before hire.

Discuss How Your Agency Has Utilized The "Ask Me!" Survey Results.

Discuss your quality assurance practices, including any agency accreditations

SMVI has provided Quality Assurance functions formally since early 1993 with the inception of its Quality Assurance Committee formally known as the Risk Management Committee (the Committee). It was the position of the Board of Directors that if it could lower the "risk" of providing services to individuals, it would thereby raise the quality of those services. The Board decreed that such a Committee be formed and appointed one of its members as their representative on the Committee. In addition to the Board Member, the Committee also has staff representatives from both Community Support Services and Supported Employment Services, Individual Support Services, and is chaired by the SMVI Director of Quality Assurance. Outside members include several individuals and representatives from the community at large. It also have a licensed Ph.D. level psychologist who is a member of the committee, but who does not count as either an insider or an outsider.

How Does Your Agency Support People In Becoming Active Members Of Their Community?

SMVI tailors its services to fit the needs and wishes of the individual and it encourages participants to socialize and work in their communities.
