Unique or Distinctive Qualities

Shared Support Maryland, Inc. provides support through person direction, planning and organizational change accordingly to people with all levels of disability. Shared Support, Inc. provides a wide range of supports that are individualized to people that perhaps typically are referred to people with severe or profound disabilities. Regardless of disability people have the right to a quality of life that define and those that are paid by them help them to obtain.

Shared Support Maryland, Inc. provides Supports Brokerage through the New Directions Waiver (as well as through private pay). Shared Support Maryland, Inc. employs trained Support Brokers that comply with Shared Support, Inc. mission and values. Support Brokers responsibilities are not limited to the following:

Shared Support Maryland, Inc. does not operate day programs, sheltered workshops or group homes. People choose their living situations, roommates and staff. People choose what they would like to do during the day, evening and weekend. This makes planning and implementation difficult at times and in the long run - people satisfied with their lives and the support they pay for.

How Does Your Agency Support People In Becoming Active Members Of Their Community?

People Having Meaningful Lives is one facet of its Continuous Quality Improvement plan and one of the most important operational outcomes at Shared Support Maryland, Inc. Its Continuous Quality Improvement plan describes this:

The success of Shared Support Maryland, Inc. is measured by the level of each person's satisfaction, participation and self-direction of a meaningful life. Staff persons demonstrate a high level of knowledge regarding the individual's likes, dislikes, preferences, hopes, dreams, communication style, capacity and gifts, and knowledge of community resources, groups, traditions, and leisure opportunities. The support staff are long term stable employees of Shared Support, Inc.

A person Centered Plan exists that identifies who that person is and how they want to spend their days in meaningful activities - employment, volunteering, continuing education, retirement, etc. People have unpaid friends and family with whom they spend their time. Through the circle meeting process, develop and implement action plans that include people in community groups of their choice.

People engage work or meaningful day time activity. Through circle meeting process for each individual determine that they are participating in the day time activity they desire. Ensure that their choice of day time activity was an informed decision based on the wide array of options that are available to all people including; employment.

People have effective communication methods and skills to develop relationships and increase their participation in their community. People and their teams support the development of a wide array of communication tools or options for all people that includes the use of technology, and other non-verbal methods so they may make choices communicate preferences, develop relatioships, and contribute their gifts to the community.
