Why Help?

Knowing that an individual with intellectual or developmental disabilities is benefiting from your compassion, time and generosity will undoubtedly make your volunteer experience memorable and rewarding!

Volunteer Opportunities

When you volunteer at the Potomac Center you can choose to interact directly with our individuals or provide some 'behind the scenes' assistance.

Some of the interactions with our individuals include:

  • Mentoring;
  • Tutoring;
  • Assisting with Arts and Crafts;
  • Playing Chess, Board Games or Sports;
  • Helping with Gardening and Landscaping;
  • Teaching or Coaching Piano;
  • Reading;
  • Cooking; and
  • Helping with Community Outings.

Behind the scenes help includes:

  • Helping with Data Entry/Clerical Work;
  • Assisting the Volunteer Association;
  • Assisting with Campus Activities; and
  • Taking Pictures.

Requirements

To become a Volunteer at Potomac Center, you should:

  • Have a desire to enrich the lives of others;
  • Have the ability to work cooperatively with Center staff;
  • Be willing to adhere to the policies and procedures of the Center;
  • Be reliable and dependable;
  • Have a clean criminal background;
  • Complete a Volunteer Application; and
  • Be at least 16 years old or accompanied by a trained adult.

Please remember that "student service learning hours" are awarded to high school students.
