Mission Statement

The mission of Chesterwye Center is to enhance the lives of adults with developmental disabilities towards personal independence and choice. The program offers a wide range of services that will assist individuals to develop their abilities, support their life choices, and become a valued member of their community. Chesterwye Center provides traditional, residential, and day services, as well as CSLA, mentoring, social activities, job placement, and coordination and transportation for medical appointments.

Unique or Distinctive Qualities

Chesterwye Center has always received immense support from the community. Four of its homes were built with community donations and one of its its vehicles was donated by a family oriented business. The Center is known for its pleasant, supportive, person center atmosphere. Chesterwye has an open door policy, and family members are encouraged to visit. The Center provides individualized, well rounded training in many areas; independent living, prevocational skills, and vocational skills, depending on needs. Community living alternative ranges form 24 hours supports to independent living situations. The amount of support is determined in accordance with the needs of each environment. The Center is dedicated to supporting individuals in their least restricted environment. Individuals are supported in their homes through Family and Individual Support Services. Supports include transportation, drop-in supports, assistance in home care, medication administration, and respite care. Respite may be provided for the individuals in the homes or in one of the Chesterwye Residential houses. The residents are involved in many activities, such as but not limited to, cleaning, cooking, and shopping. Evenings and weekends are full of community activities, this allows for each person to lead an active social life, attending movies, Special Olympics, festivals, outdoor concerts, dancing, cover dish bingo, volunteering for Polar Bear Plunge, and so on. Chesterwye was one of the first agencies to develop ALU, and to have a work crew out in the community doing meaningful jobs. Chesterwye continually pursues new ans better ways to assist each individual. Chesterwye strives to promote an individual's independence as well as an integrated life with the local community for people with developmental disabilities. Chesterwye's sensory program strengthens the power to communicate. Chesterwye provides instructions of basic sign language, computer skills, motor sensory development and sound therapy.

The Quality Assurance Plan has been developed to not only support the mission statement of Chesterwye Center, but also address the needs identified during the "Ask Me!" Interviews. The staff, family members, and individuals are all committed to improving the quality of oversight to ensure the mission of the agency. Chesterwye Center is amember of the Quality Assurance Workgroup on the Eastern Shore.

How Does Your Agency Support People In Becoming Active Members Of Their Community?

Chesterwye Center has the tremendous resource of human potential. Becoming actve members of its community is vital to the total wellness of its individuals. Its individuals are active members of their local churches, helping with collecting the offerings and greeting other members. The individuals play an active role in the Polar Bear Plunge each year, raising the funds for special olympics. The individuals provide volunteer companion services to senior citizens at local adult day medical centers.
